How It Came To Be

This cookbook was inspired by some of my customers while working for FedEx Office (formerly Kinko's) who would bring in home-made cookbooks to be reproduced. I'd always wanted to make a family/friend cookbook. When my professor told me that my final project could be anything of my choosing, it seemed like a logical fit. This book was researched, planed, wire-framed (yeah, I did that for every master spread), designed, laid out, constructed, preflighted, printed, finished and just-about-anything-else-you-can-come-up-with by me. It still remains one of my personal favorite projects that I've ever done. I printed 25 books and gave them to my friends and family members. In 2010 this placed 2nd in the WNC Student Art Show in category Advanced Layout & Typography.

How It Came To Be

This was designed for a logo competition that was open to all students of Western Nevada College and Carson High School. Very little information was given about the company as well as about the creative direction. I chose the globe in lieu of a house because most other “greenhouse” related logos incorporated a building. Not wanting this logo to get lost in the shuffle, I broadened the community idea into a global idea. Ultimately, this is the reason why I placed second. Though they are not using my logo, I feel that I learned a very valuable lesson about overthinking during the logo design process and I had a lot of fun working with Karen on this logo. I entered this logo in the Western Nevada College Student Art Show in March 2010. It received an Honorable Mention.

How It Came To Be

I saw this Spiral Aloe (Aloe polyphilla, an endangered species) in the San Francisco Botanical Garden during an impromptu weekend road trip to San Francisco. I took roughly 50 shots of this plant on a very overcast day. The very last shot that I took was the golden shot. When I imported this into Photoshop to check the levels, I found that I didn't need to adjust anything! I love it when that happens! I submitted this to the WNC Student Art Show in March 2007 not expecting anything but just wanting to show the world this really cool shot that I took while on the road! To my astonishment, I won 1st place in the photography category. I have since loaned the reprinting rights to Jeffrey Reinhardt. The photo can be found on the back side of his letterhead and business cards.

How It Came To Be

I was approached by Jeffrey in September 2010 to create an identity for a start-up called Quantum Nutraceuticals. The requirements for the project were to incorporate an alpha and omega symbol, an atom and an aloe plant. Additionally, I needed to incorporate an earthy green and gold into the logo. I chose a very simplified form for the atom so that it could also suggest a drop of aloe falling into water. The alpha and omega lowercase characters were used to give the atom depth. From there I added a drop of aloe and repeated the shape which helps the user determine that it is, in fact, a liquid and not fire in the center of the logo.
